George Moran was the last captain of gang of bootleggers, gamblers, union organizers, and safeblowers known as the North Side mob. The North Siders rose to underworld fame under the shrewd leadership of their first chief, Dean O'Banion (1892-1924). O'Banion's 1924 murder at the hands of Capone-Genna gunmen restored the North Siders to their fighting roots. They remained perpetually at war with Capone, and the strife did not finally end until Capone was found guilty of tax evasion and packed off to prison.
